Fidel works for the Los Indios bird sanctuary on the island of Juventud in southwestern Cuba. His primary mission is to observe bird behaviors, especially that of the Cuban crane, the largest bird in the Caribbean. There are presently eleven crane colonies in the Cuban archipelago. They are nevertheless threatened with extinction.

With the help of his friend José, Fidel constantly crosses the reserve in search of nests. The two men carry out the important job of marking for biologists in Havana.

Fidel and José are totally involved in their work both day and night, often at the expense of their own families. Thanks to their dedication and enthusiasm, the reserve has more nests every year. There is much more to accomplish however, if Cubans are to continue to admire their country’s largest bird flying across the sky.
