The sloth lives in wooded areas of Central America and in the northern parts of South America. Located on the Estrella River delta near the Panamanian border, Aviarios de Caribe is a private, protected zone, a unique environment for Costa Rican flora and fauna. Judy and Luis Arroyo initially created this sanctuary in 1986 for the protection and observation of birds.
In September, 1992, Judy Arroyo took in a sloth after its mother had been killed by a car. Buttercup was only three months old. A few years later, Judy created the Buttercup Foundation of Aviarios, the only emergency and reinsertion center in the world for the sloth. Since then, she has taken in about thirty of them. They are cared for with the goal of placing them back into their natural habitat.
